12.09.19 Disturbance on Shirley Street Sunday Morning

2019-70638 – PERSON with a WEAPON/DOG SHOOTING

Cory Mathes

On Sunday, December 8th at 9:13 a.m., Baytown Police responded to the 5400 block of Shirley Street in reference to a man with a gun.  Upon arrival, the officer observed a white male sitting in a vehicle and gave the subject several commands to exit the vehicle.  The subject, later identified as 31 year-old Cory Mathes, eventually exited the vehicle but would not put his hands up and step away from the vehicle.  Cory attempted to reach inside of the vehicle and officers quickly advanced on him and a struggle ensued.  He was eventually placed in handcuffs and arrested for Interference with Public Duties.  The officer conducted a pat frisk and recovered a small amount of marijuana on Cory.  Another officer checked the vehicle that Cory was sitting in and located a large plastic pistol on the passenger seat.  During this time, it is believed that someone, in close proximity, released an aggressive pit bull in the direction of the officers.  The officers attempted to take cover but the pit bull lunged at one of the officers and was ultimately shot.  Mug shot attached.
