08.20.19 Woman Stabbed Saturday Night

2019-48638 – On August 17th at 9:50 p.m., officers responded to a report of a stabbing at an apartment in the 1300 block of East James. Upon arrival officers found a 38 year old female outside of her apartment, who appeared to have been stabbed in the chest. At the same time a black male, identified as 58 year old Malvis Barnett walked up and advised he was the one who stabbed the female and officers took him into custody. During the ensuing investigation officers learned that Barnett and the victim had gotten into an argument after returning from a family function. During that altercation, Barnett turned violent and began assaulting the victim. The two then went inside their apartment where the assault apparently continued, resulting in Barnett pinning the victim to the ground and stabbing her in the upper chest area. The victim’s 19 year old son attempted to intervene which prompted Barnett to swing the knife at him, cutting the 19 year olds arm. Barnett then left the apartment and got into a Toyota Camry, the 19 year old following close behind. Barnett started the car and drove through the parking lot, nearly striking the 19 year old before running into the building. Barnett then exited the vehicle and walked away, only to return a short time later and surrender without incident to the officers. The victim was transported to Herman Hospital to be treated for her injuries and at last report was in stable condition. Barnett, who also suffered a minor cut to his upper chest during the incident,  was transported to the Baytown Jail and was ultimately charged with Aggravated Assault of a Family Member through the Harris County District Attorney’s Office. Mug shot attached.
