05.05.17 Double Shooting/One Dead/Shady Hill

Double Shooting, One Dead at Apartment Complex
Case #2017-26835

On Friday, April 5 2017 at 5:09 a.m. Baytown officers responded to The Bridge Apartments located in the 3400 block of Shady Hill Drive in reference to a shooting. When officers arrived on scene, they discovered a deceased male lying on the ground inside of the apartment. The male, identified as 38 year old Lloyd Trim Jr. of Baytown, appeared to have suffered at least one gunshot wound to the head. Inside of the apartment officers also found the decedent’s girlfriend, identified as 20 year old Jasmine Gonzales of Baytown, who although had been shot multiple times, was still alive and was subsequently air-lifted to a Houston area hospital where she is in stable condition.

During the course of the investigation Detectives learned that 32 year old Derrick Bernard Sr. of Baytown, who was an acquaintance of both victims, had arrived at the apartment in the early morning hours. Once there, Mr. Bernard kicked the front door in, entered the apartment and threatened Ms. Gonzales and Mr. Trim with a gun. Ms. Gonzales and Mr. Trim retreated to the bedroom closet for safety, where they were both shot by Mr. Bernard. Detectives also learned that Mr. Trim and Mr. Bernard had a heated argument earlier in the night over a vehicle that Mr. Trim was borrowing from Mr. Bernard and the fact that Mr. Trim had suspected Mr. Bernard of entering his apartment and stealing money from him while he and Ms. Gonzales were away from home.

Detectives later located Mr. Bernard leaving his residence in the 4200 block of McLean Rd., driving the vehicle he had loaned to Mr. Trim. Mr. Bernard was stopped by police and taken into custody and was transported to the Baytown Police Department. Detectives conducted an interview with Mr. Bernard, during which he confirmed the problems he had with Mr. Trim over the money and the fact Mr. Trim would not return his vehicle. The Harris County District Attorney’s office has accepted charges of Capital Murder on Mr. Bernard and those charges are expected to be formally filed later this evening.
